Although he could have represented his father's homeland, Morocco, Yamal ultimately chose to play for Spain. This decision sparked considerable discussion, and Moroccan Football Federation President Lekjah also addressed the matter in an interview with Onze Mondial.

This 18-year-old player is one of the key figures in this Spanish team, which is also considered a favorite to win the 2026 World Cup. As the 2024 European Championship winners, Spain has already advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Portugal 1-0.

However, this talented player, born in the suburbs of Barcelona and raised through various youth teams in Spain, could have chosen to represent his father Munir Nasraoui's homeland, Morocco. The Barcelona striker had briefly considered representing the senior national team, leaning towards Atlas Lions, especially after their run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, where they lost 0-2 to France.

On the other hand, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation had been actively pursuing this then-emerging star. The two sides arranged several meetings in Morocco and Spain, but were unable to change the player's decision. In 2023, Yamal ultimately chose to represent Spain on the international stage.

"They are always welcome."

Moroccan Football Federation President Lekjah reiterated this point during a lengthy interview with Onze Mondial. He said, "We respect Yamal's choice and have never questioned it. Our attitude towards Yamal and his family has never changed because of it. As far as I know, they often go back for holidays, especially in the northern provinces, which are their hometown. They are always welcome."

He then added sarcastically, "Lamin Yamal. I don't know any Spaniard named Yamal." It's worth noting that this Spanish rising star's full name is Lamin Yamal Naslavi Ebana, and he only prints his two names on his jersey: Lamin and Yamal. These names come from two people who helped him when his mother was pregnant and his family was facing difficulties. To express their gratitude, his parents gave him these two names, followed by their respective surnames.

Lekja went on to say, "Regarding player selection, we have never put regrets or pride on the table. For us, football is about the universality of football. Representing a team with an administrative nationality is simply a choice and does not change our connection with this country." He added, "Our history and civilization make us proud, and we are even more proud when the Moroccan national team helps friendly, neighboring teams like Spain grow."

Before the World Cup started, Lekjah jokingly said in an interview with Aljazeera360, "I hope we can meet Spain in the World Cup final and see if he really made the right choice." If Atlas Lions eliminate France and Spain then overcomes Manchester United, the two teams could meet in the semi-finals on July 14.
