Bayer Leverkusen attacker Maza recently gave an interview to Sport Illustrated, discussing his rapid growth since joining Leverkusen, his experience representing Algeria in the World Cup, and his thoughts on Germany's new national team coach, Jürgen Klopp.
In his first season after joining Bayer Leverkusen, 20-year-old Mazar quickly became an important player for the team and was voted the team's best player by fans. However, he stated that he hopes the team can achieve its collective goals more than individual honors.
"I'm certainly happy and grateful to be chosen by the fans. But if the team can achieve its goals, I'd rather not have this award. Qualifying for the Champions League is our 100% motivation this season."
After moving from Hertha Berlin's second division to Bayer Leverkusen, Mazar quickly adapted to the Bundesliga's pace, subsequently earning Champions League appearances and representing Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. Reflecting on the past year, he described it as a "crazy and transformative" experience.
“A lot has happened this year, and I’ve gained a lot of playing time, which has been very important for my growth.”
Speaking about his World Cup experience, Maza said that being able to participate in this top-level international competition was special enough, and that he also started four matches for Algeria, which will be an unforgettable memory.
"The World Cup is the biggest event in the world. It's incredible to be able to participate, let alone play four games. I will never forget it in my life."
Algeria lost 0-3 to Argentina in the group stage, with Messi scoring all three goals. Speaking about playing alongside Messi, Maza said it was a childhood dream of his.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing against players like Messi and Ronaldo. Now I’m at least halfway there. It’s an honor to experience such a moment as a young player.”
However, Mazzar emphasized that he did not hold back in the match against Messi.
“I still gave it my all and played my own way. I even almost provided an assist a few minutes into the game. It’s not surprising that we lost to Argentina in the end; they were the defending champions and went on to reach the final.”
Regarding whether Messi should have been shown a red card for a physical altercation with Algerian captain Mandi during the match, Maza said he did not see the details clearly.
“I was quite far away at the time, and like many of my teammates, I didn’t see the move clearly. Apart from Aisa himself, not many people protested. Perhaps Messi was indeed a bit lucky, but the referee had already made his decision, and that was the end of it.”
In the Algerian national team, Mazar has become a popular young player among fans. Facing external attention, he stated that he will remain calm.
"Sometimes being in the spotlight is a good thing; it can motivate you. But some people might lose themselves because of it. I will try to view this passion correctly, not draw wrong conclusions from it, and just focus on doing my own thing well."
Mazar had previously represented Germany at various youth levels, but ultimately chose to play for his father's native Algeria. Now that Klopp is the German national team coach, there is much speculation about whether he will regret his decision.
Maza stated that he has never regretted his decision.
“I have never regretted my choice. It is an honor to represent Algeria, and I love this country. Of course, I also love Germany.”
Speaking about Klopp's tenure as Germany's national team coach, Maza said, "If you can call him that, Klopp has brought an incredible coach to Germany. If he can regroup these excellent players, Germany has a real chance to become a football powerhouse again."
Atletico Madrid had previously expressed interest in Mazzar, and Bayer Leverkusen's sporting director, Rolfes, had also stated that selling the player was not impossible. Mazzar believes this reflects the club's recognition of him.
“It feels great because it shows that Leverkusen really values me. You can feel that the club truly trusts you, which gives you extra confidence and motivation.”
When talking about new coach Carles Martinez, Mazzar gave him high praise.
“He is a very energetic person with a high level of commitment. He pays great attention to detail, which is his defining characteristic. At the same time, he always wants the team to play beautiful football, which is why we like him. He is an excellent coach and can help us continue to improve.”
Maza is full of expectations for Leverkusen's squad changes in the new season.
“We are a great team with many excellent players. As we get to know each other better, we will become more and more in sync. I believe we can achieve great things this season.”
Finally, Maza also spoke about his former Hertha Berlin teammate, Kenneth Ashhoren, who is currently sidelined due to a metabolic disorder. He believes the young player has very high potential.
“Kennett is an outstanding player, especially considering his age. His most important task now is to get back in shape. When he returns to the court, you will see a very special player. He combines physical attributes, tactical awareness, and technical ability.”
