Liverpool's initial offer, reportedly around £90 million ($122.3 million), was rejected earlier this month by Paris Saint-Germain, the French Ligue 1 and Champions League winners, who are asking for £135 million ($184.2 million) for the French international winger.
Gakopo is currently linked with both Tottenham and Manchester City, and his departure could open up space for a deal to acquire Barkola and provide Liverpool with the necessary funds to bring in the former Lyon player.
Liverpool have already agreed personal terms with Barcola, who has been the Merseyside club's top transfer target all summer. However, Barcola has two years remaining on his current contract, and while he hasn't insisted on leaving Paris, he also doesn't rule out staying.
However, all parties currently believe that the deal could be completed before the transfer window closes on September 1st, although it is still some distance away. Paris is expected to receive a new, improved offer within the next 24 to 48 hours, which could be the decisive factor.
Last Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain's sporting director, Cuñaert, admitted that the transfer window is far from over and many things can still happen.
Barcoa will turn 24 next year. He played in all eight of France's matches during their fourth-place finish at this summer's World Cup. So far this season, Barcoa has yet to make an appearance in Paris Saint-Germain's three matches.
Also on Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain announced that Ousmane Dembélé would miss Friday's match against Lille after being granted "a period of rest".
Since returning from the World Cup representing France, the Ballon d'Or winner's playing time has been limited; in Paris Saint-Germain's first three matches this season, he has not played more than 45 minutes in any of them.
The club said in a statement: "After reaching an agreement with the coaching staff and sporting management, Ousmane Dembélé will take a break for the next few days."
"He will resume training with the team on Monday."
